The History of Sacred Heart School
|
|
Sacred Heart School, established in 1887, has offered a choice in education to residents in Boone and surrounding communities for 121 years. Since the first graduating class in 1890, there have been hundreds of students and their families touched with the caring education system available through Sacred Heart. The facility housing the school has been well maintained over the years by caring dedicated employees. In the early years of the school, enrollment necessitated construction of the present building in 1951, with the south addition added as a high school wing in 1966-67. Sacred Heart has been able to continue its elementary school, although economic conditions made it necessary to close Ryan High School in May of 1970, bringing to an end a period of 83 years of uninterrupted high school parochial education in Boone. The grade school was able to take over the high school facility, which included 5 classrooms, a science lab, library, offices, kitchen, and a regulation size gymnasium with a full-size stage. Today, Sacred Heart School is widely used by not only the parish and school activities, but also by the community at large. Due to the excellent gymnasium facilities, many community sport activities and larger banquets are held in the building. After the September 11 tragedy, Sacred Heart School signed an agreement with the American Red Cross to be a designated Red Cross emergency center. Sacred Heart School enrolls 175 students in grades Pre-kindergarten through 8 and serves over 195 students in the Religious Education program. The school enjoys a wonderful working relationship with our public school system. We are proud to be able to continue to contribute positively to the community through our challenging educational system and by offering our facility for community uses.
